How to make a trencher from a walk-behind tractor with your own hands: idea + video

trencher

Anyone who has ever dug a trench for laying cables, pipes or installing curbs in a summer cottage knows firsthand how laborious and exhausting work it is. In our article we will tell you how to make a trencher with your own hands in order to greatly facilitate and speed up this type of work. To create it, you will need a gearbox with a rotor shaft from a broken angle grinder. And as a drive we will use an engine with an upper gearbox from a lawn mower.

Materials for manufacturing

To make a trencherb, you will need:

  • grinder gearbox with rotor shaft;
  • metal pipe according to the diameter of the braid rod;
  • gas trimmer engine with top gearbox and shaft;
  • thick sheet metal for making a knife;
  • sheet metal 4 mm;
  • welding machine;
  • Bulgarian;
  • screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • vise;
  • hammer;
  • drill;
  • metal corners, pipes, round timber;
  • a pair of wheels from the trolley;
  • bicycle handlebar with brake lever.

Step 1. Making a shaft with a lower trencher gearbox

1

We remove the gearbox from the old angle grinder along with the engine rotor.

2

We take out the shaft with the armature windings from the gearbox and cut it in half.

3

In the future, we need a part of the shaft that is included in the gearbox of the grinder. We knock off the windings from it.

4

We remove the rod with the shaft from the lawn mower. If you plan to use one engine on both devices, it is better to purchase a second shaft and make a rod from a strong metal pipe. If not, strengthen the chainsaw bar by inserting a metal pipe inside it.

5

We cut the shaft and the bar (or the pipe that replaces it) from the side of the entrance to the upper gearbox of the trimmer to the required length (the shaft by 25-30 cm, the bar - taking into account the lengthening of the shaft by welding the grinder shaft).

6

We weld both shafts with cut sides. To improve alignment, you can drill a hole in the center of one of the shafts, and machine a stud of the desired diameter in the other.

7

We cut out the cover for the gearbox from sheet steel and drill mounting holes and a hole for the shaft in it.

8

We assemble the grinder gearbox with a manufactured shaft. We close it with a lid.

9

Having inserted the rod and the shaft into the upper gearbox of the trimmer, we weld the second end of the rod to the cover of the gearbox of the grinder.

Step 2. Making an active trencher knife

1

From thick metal we cut out a disk for a knife and six rectangular endings. In the center of the disk, we drill a hole for mounting in the grinder gearbox.

2

We bend the edges of the ends at an angle of 90 degrees and weld them to the disk, alternating the directions of the bends in different directions.

Step 3. Assemble the trencher

1

We weld the frame of the trencher from corners, metal pipes, round timber and a bicycle handlebar, providing a mount for the engine through the fasteners of the upper gearbox.

2

We install wheels from the trolley on the axle.

3

We fix the engine and the trencher knife.

4

We cut out and install a protective cover from sheet metal.

The casing also functions as an earth spreader when the trencher is operating.
5

We bring the gas cable to the bicycle handlebar and connect it to the brake lever.

Step 4. Testing

1

We take the trencher to the right place and, pulling the starter handle, start the engine.

2

Having slightly pulled the device back and forth with the steering wheel towards you and, adding gas, we begin to immerse the knife into the ground. Determine the speed of movement during the digging process, based on engine power and soil density.

In trenches dug in this way, it is convenient to plant berry bushes and small ornamental plants in even rows.
