Quality soldering requires quality tools. Soldering stations are good, but too expensive. For a person who has just begun to master a new skill, this is not always acceptable.
However, a good soldering iron is necessary, and we will show you how to make a simple soldering iron temperature controller - i.e. we will equip it with the characteristics inherent in a professional tool.

Why do you need a temperature controller?
A temperature regulator, or more precisely, a power regulator, is needed to maintain a certain temperature regime on the soldering iron tip. This is necessary in order to regulate and select the appropriate temperature for solder, - melting t is different for different alloys.
Also, the regulator will help fight the overheating of the soldering iron tip. The voltage in our electrical network varies over a wide range - in the morning the soldering iron burns, and in the evening it hardly heats up. So if excessive heating occurs, then the sting quickly “burns out”, i.e. it has to be corrected more often - to clean it up and tinker again.
Method number 1 - making a regulator from scratch
At the beginning of the article, an elementary circuit of a completely reliable and convenient regulator was shown.
For manufacturing you will need:
- thyristor
- diode for 1 A 400-600 V
- capacitor 50-100 V at 4.7-5 uF
- resistor 30 kΩ
- adjustable resistor 47 kOhm
All elements are based on a variable resistor. The thyristor is insulated with heat shrink. The finished device is placed in the power supply case, which are used to charge phones.
Method number 2 - dimmer as a regulator
This solution is very successful not only for beginners. Dimmers - voltage regulators for incandescent lamps. In connection with the gradual abandonment of incandescent lamps, these devices are no longer needed. You can give them a second life - they also regulate the voltage of 220V well. And absolutely anyone can connect it to a soldering iron.
Installation of the temperature controller is simple - serial connection to the soldering iron. To do this, you can use the extension housing for two sockets.
Turning the dimmer knob changes the voltage supply to the soldering iron. For ease of use, labels of optimal temperatures are applied to its body.
Also, the carrying case with a dimmer can be equipped with a clamp for attaching an adjustable socket to a workbench.
Compact, convenient and reliable.
