Tired of constantly getting tangled in wires? ⚡ Just make a reel for an extension cord from a plastic canister?

do-it-yourself extension cord reel

Who said canisters are just for water? We will try to convince you of this, since it can be used for many more useful devices.

In this article we will tell you how to make a reliable, safe cable reel from a canister with your own hands.

There is an electric cable

The main thing in working with electricity is safety. Therefore, for the manufacture of cable carrying, we will use only dielectric materials.

  • 5 liter plastic canister
  • PVC pipe with a diameter of 50 mm
  • piece of plexiglass
  • Cable section 1.5 mm, length 20 m
  • Remote socket and plug
  • Bolt M6 and a pair of nuts

You will also need:

The carrier will be a case of a canister and a spool for winding the wire.

Stage number 1 - making a spool

Preparing the spool

We will use a PVC pipe as a spool.

1

We measure the width of the canister and mark this size on the pipe, stepping back from the outer edge.

2

Cut off with a hacksaw.

3

We clean up the edges.

4

We drill a hole in the middle of the pipe on one wall - a place for the wire to come out.

At this stage, we complete the manipulations with the pipe, since it will be required for marking other homemade elements.

Stage 2 - spool handle

Handle preparation

1

The rotation of the spool will be carried out by means of a Plexiglas handle.

2

To do this, on a sheet of dielectric, previously prepared with a pipe (spool), we mark the place where the handle is attached. We also draw the shape of the future handle in any form. Such blanks need 2 pcs.

3

According to the marking, we make sawing, for this we use a jigsaw and a drill with a crown. We skin blanks.

The resulting parts are glued, sanded and painted as shown in the photo above.

Marking and cutting

1

The spool will be exactly in the center, so we make markings on both sides of the canister.

2

The diameters of the holes for the pipe are different, so we mark them with the prepared PVC pipe.

3

Drill holes with a crown or cut with a knife.

Stage number 4 - gluing the spool and handle

The spool is ready

1

The paint on the plexiglass has dried up, so you can glue the handle to the pipe.

2

But before that, on the handle you need to drill a hole for the bolt, for which rotation will be carried out. It should turn out as shown in the photo above.

Stage number 5 - final assembly

Carry Assembly

We assemble the entire structure: we put the wire through the spool, then through the canister and its lid. Everything should turn out as shown in the diagram below.

super carrying

As a result, we got an extension cord that is convenient for transportation. It is quite sealed and, importantly, it is made of dielectric materials - electric shock through it is excluded.
