Modern safety razors contain several blades in their cassettes to ensure a quality shave. These blades are able to maintain their sharpness for quite a long time. But in any case, sooner or later they also become dull and become unusable.
The cost of the cassette is relatively high, and those who shave quite often know how serious a cost item this is. Unlike a regular straight razor, which can be sharpened and straightened at any hardware store, a safety razor has no such tools at all. This is easily explained, since it is very problematic to come up with a device that can sharpen several thin blades that are at a distance of fractions of a millimeter from each other.
And yet, there is a way to sharpen such blades. He uses the texture of denim as a sharpener. In this case, the blades are sharpened on one side, but this turns out to be quite enough to restore the razor's performance. The article describes in detail the process of sharpening the Gillette razor using a hard pile of denim.

Necessary materials
For sharpening you will need the following:
- a piece of denim fabric of sufficient length and width
- a small bar 15-20 cm long and up to 3 cm wide
- actually a razor
After all the materials are prepared, start sharpening. The sequence of actions in this case will be as follows:
Action #1 Create a solid surface for sharpening
Sharpening is done with the help of a “jeans” stretched over a bar to give the surface to be sharpened sufficient strength. To do this, the bar is placed in denim.
It is recommended to use the side of the fabric on which the thickness of the texture is higher. In this case, this is the inside of the pants. In this case, the bar must be located in such a way that there is no contact between the sidewalls on the cassette and the sharpening device.
No contact is necessary because the sidewalls are located above the surface of the blades. If they have contact with the surface being sharpened, then the blades will not have it. That is, there will be no sharpening process.
Action #2 Sharpening the blades.
After the bar is correctly placed and the sharpening surface is formed, start sharpening. To do this, the razor is placed at the beginning of the bar and its movement begins in the direction opposite to that in which shaving is carried out.
It is necessary to make 150-200 movements to sharpen the blade. Usually, 50-60 movements are made in one direction in one pass, after which the direction of sharpening changes. In this case, the razor moves in the same way - in the direction opposite to the movement during shaving.
