How to make a cork for a 20 liter bottle: an easy and reliable way?

bottle cap

If you have a 20-liter bottle, then you probably faced a problem - where to find a cork for it so that you can store, for example, birch sap. Also, such corks are used by those who independently make wine from fruits and berries collected in the country. It turns out that they are quite easy to make at home, spending quite a bit of time on it.

Materials for manufacturing

In order to make a cork on a bottle, you will need:

  • 100g disposable plastic cup;
  • potato starch;
  • cheap silicone sealant (3 plugs come out of one tube);
  • sealant gun;
  • knife;
  • electric drill.

Step 1. Prepare the mixture

1

We open the package with starch and pour it on the countertop.

2

We make a small indentation in the center of the hill of starch.

3

We insert the tube with sealant into the gun and open the sealant with a knife.

4

Using a gun, squeeze out about 1/3 of the sealant from the tube.

Squeezing silicone

5

So that your hands do not stick to silicone, dip them in starch. Also sprinkle starch from the edges of a silicone slide.

6

We begin to knead the starch with silicone.

7

Then we take the "dough" in our hands and continue to knead. It should not become too hard, plastic enough, and most importantly, that it does not have folds along the edges.

It is necessary to obtain a homogeneous mass. If cavities remain in the “test”, then air will pass through them.
8

When the mass begins to stick to your hands, roll it again in the starch left on the table and continue to knead.

Step 2. Shaping the Cork

1

When we get a mass that resembles plasticine, we give it the shape of a cork. We make sure that there are no folds in the workpiece.

2

Dip the workpiece in starch (so that it does not stick), insert it into a plastic cup and tamp. With progressive movements, we try to squeeze out all the air from the cup.

Insert the mass into the glass

To make this easier, you can make holes in the bottom of the cup with an awl.
3

Leave to harden (at least 3-4 hours).

4

We take out the workpiece from the glass.

Silicone sealant is acetic, so the cork will initially smell like vinegar. Over time, this smell will fade. To speed up the process, you can first put the cork in boiling water, and then in cold water, changing it several times after a while. You can add a little baking soda to the water to neutralize the acetic acid.

Step 3. The final stage

1

To install a water seal, we drill a through hole in the center of the cork with a drill slightly smaller than the diameter of the tube.

2

We install a water seal and cut off the excess along the edge of the cork with a knife, giving it a finished shape.

3

The bottle cap is ready.
